A WISE MAN ONCE SAID
By Sabur Abdul-Basit *
There have been many influential men and women who have had a great impact on the lives of others throughout history. Among them is the Prophet of Islam Muhammad bin Abdullah (Peace be Upon Him) whose sayings and practices are emulated daily. It has been said, by a non Muslim author, that he is the most influential man in history. While he is of course well known to the Muslims of the world, in most parts of the non Muslim world little if anything is known about him. He imparted to his companions advice, instructions, and admonitions about how to live the totality of their lives. It is from his wisdom that we would like to share with our readers some of his sayings and highlight how they can be useful in the day to day lives of those who are Muslim and non Muslim. It is mentioned in the Qur’an about the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) that Allah (God) said “And We have not sent you except as a mercy to mankind.” (The Qur’an’ Chapter 21, verse 107) He has been described as the “Prophet of Mercy” as was witnessed by many of the events in his life. It is also said “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.” (The Qur’an Chapter 33, verse 21) Being the last prophet and messenger of God, his mission was to make clear to mankind the way that was to be followed to “Paradise”. The matter of how to live one’s life has been defined by Allah since the beginning of man’s existence on Earth. The first man Adam was also the first prophet of God. He taught his offspring how to live and worship God correctly. So from the first prophet to the last prophet, Allah has taught mankind how to obey and worship their creator and have the proper relationship with Him in their lives. Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) is one of the prophets of God who have been described as having great determination. They were Nuuh (Noah), Ibraaheem (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) and Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him and on Them). This determination was essential for him to overcome the many hardships and obstacles that came his way as he strove with his companions to fulfill his mission. Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) is the only prophet and messenger of God whose life was recorded for mankind to learn about. His daily life, especially after he became a prophet and messenger of Allah was fastidiously written down by his companions. What he said, did and approved of is being followed today by over one billion Muslims. I would like to share in the future with our readers many of the sayings of Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) so that they can gain a better appreciation of him as a prophet and messenger of Allah as well as a father, husband and for many an undiscovered depository of wisdom and truth that can benefit them in all aspects of their lives.
