Between Mountains
and Deep Seas
 |
In a recent article I wrote about Allah as Lord of all of creation and how most people believe in a Supreme Being. Well, since He is the Lord of all of creation, it only makes sense that He is the Creator of all of creation. This is not merely a play on words. Allah mentioned certain aspects of how He created His creation more than 1400 years ago in the Qur'aan that was directly revealed to that most wise of wise men, Rasulullah Muhammad son of Abdullah (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him).
In Surat Alnaba’a, Allah says that He made the mountains as pegs. “Have We not made the earth as a bed and the mountains as pegs?” (Qur'aan Surah 78: Verses 6-7). We clearly know that pegs are used to hold tents and other items firmly to the ground and in place. It has become well known among structural geologists and tectonic geomophologists (scientists who study mountains) that mountains have roots that are deeply embedded into the earth. Hence the mountains are pegs whose roots are deep in the earth which keeps the land above from shifting.
Allah has mentioned the important role of mountains in which they keep the Earth from shifting in Surat Alnahl when He says “And He has affixed into the earth mountains standing firm, lest it should shake with you…” (Qur'aan Surah 16: Verse 15). So who other than the Prophet Muhammad (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) had mentioned this information about mountains? Throughout the world mankind at that time of course knew about mountains but no one had spoken about the mountains as pegs that also kept the earth from shifting until centuries later. For our readers, don’t you think that this should lend itself to investigation about the Qur'aan and Islam?
A very fascinating aspect of the creation is the deep seas and what truly lies in the depths of water below. Allah has said in Surat Alnur “Or (the state of a disbeliever) is like the darkness in a vast deep sea, overwhelmed with waves topped by waves, topped by dark clouds, [layers of] darkness upon darkness: if a man stretches out his hand he can hardly see it! And for whom Allah has not appointed light, for him there is no light.” (Qur'aan Surah 24: Verse 40). This verse mentions the darkness that is found in the deep seas and oceans. We expect that we would not be able to see in a dark room at night without a light source. But at the time of Rasulullah (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) the precise nature and effect of the lack of light in the seas was totally unknown to man because human beings then and now are not able to dive very deep without equipment or in a submarine or scientific vessel. At 200 meters a person can barely see his or her hand. Below 1,000 feet there is no light at all. Scientists have only recently made these discoveries. In addition to this, scientists have just come to discover that there are different waves below the waves in the oceans and seas.
But these findings should give us a deeper appreciation of Allah who is the Creator of all that is in the heavens and on Earth and inside the Earth and in the depths of the seas. These are merely from His signs so that those who take heed may be reminded and worship Him following the way of His last Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad son of Abdullah (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him).
